“And the children of Israel shall pitch their tents, every man by his own camp, and every man by his own standard, throughout their hosts. But the Levites shall pitch round about the tabernacle of testimony, that there be no wrath upon the children of Israel. And the Levites shall keep charge of the tabernacle of testimony.” ~Numbers 1:52-53
God told Moses to number the men of Israel for war. How many among them were able to defend the defenseless as they came nearer and nearer to enemy territory? They were men – created to be conquerors – who had long been unable to conquer, having had to yield to the brick pits of Egypt. But now, at long last, they could make a difference!
“But not the Levites…” God told Moses. “Don’t count them for battle. They will stand between me and Israel so that my wrath will not consume them. They will care for my tabernacle, and be my chosen firstborn – my favored ones.” The price-tag of being favored. Did it feel like a blessing to the Levite men? Were there those among them that would have preferred the call to war over the cleaning and preservation of the holy place? The Bible doesn’t tell us, but we have to wonder…
Yet, we find ourselves too often in the same mental rut: longing to do something bigger, and He sets us on our knees…with the call to prayer – to intercede.
Just as the dwelling place of God was the highest calling for the Levites alone – a choosing of the best – so is prayer , and the common life. Excitement is not always the most valuable calling. Sometimes it is the quiet “behind the scenes” obedience that saves the countless lives from the wrath of God. Indeed, the Levites held the greatest privilege calling, even if it may have felt like the lowliest of all.
May we be content to be called the favored of the Most High…and not always of others.
